This is the grocery list we actually use at home in Mangaluru. We were going to the shop two or three times a week, almost always for the one thing somebody forgot. Never a big problem. Just a small tax on everyone’s evening, every week, forever.
So I put everything our kitchen actually buys onto one A4 page, grouped the way you walk through a shop. Now I print it, leave it at home, and it comes back filled once every two weeks. One trip instead of five.
Two versions, same list. Pick ಕನ್ನಡ if you want the item names in Kannada, or English if you read Kannada words more easily in English letters (akki, bele, pudi, sopu).
What is on the list
- Akki & avalakki: idli and dosa rice, sona masoori, basmati, ragi, oats, siridhanya.
- Hittu & rava: godhi hittu, maida, ragi hittu, bombay rava, shavige, sabbakki.
- Bele & kaalu: togari bele, uddina bele, hesaru bele, kadale bele, rajma, vatana.
- Pudi: uppu, arishina, menasina pudi, sambar pudi, rasam pudi, garam masala.
- Masale & oggarane: saasive, jeerige, menthya, ingu, ellu, yelakki, lavanga.
- Enne & tuppa, haalu & mosaru, dry fruits, dinasi, and sopu & detergent.
Each row has a tick box and a line for the quantity, plus blank rows in every section for whatever your house buys that mine does not.
How to use it
Print a copy and leave it where the kitchen can reach it. Tick things as they run out and write how much you need. Once a month or once a fortnight, whatever your house gets through, take the filled sheet to the shop and do it in one trip. If you would rather keep it on your phone, download the PNG and tick items in any photo markup app.
It is free to print, copy, and share. No sign-up, no email.
